Page Field Airport

Page Field is a public airport that is owned by the Lee County Port Authority. It is the premier business and general aviation airport of Southwest Florida, offering quick and convenient access to Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel & Captiva, Estero, Bonita Springs, and Pine Island.

Airport history

In 1923, the city of Fort Myers purchased a land that it planned on putting a golf course on. However, in 1927, plans changed and the site evolved into an airport. National Airlines began making stops in 1937 on a St. Petersburg-to-Miami route, but service was suspended because the sod runways were not usable during the frequent rain that Florida experiences in the summer. In 1940, the Works Projects Administration built three concrete runways, along with other improvements, to the airport and service resumed. Page Field functioned as an important advanced fighter training base during World War II. On May 21,1942, the Lee County Commission officially changed the name to Page Field, named after a local World War I hero, Captain Channing Page. In January 1943, the airfield's role had switched to that of training fighter pilots. In the 1970s, a new terminal on the north side of the field was constructed. In May 1983, the new Southwest Florida International Airport was certified for operation and Page Field was designated as a general aviation airport. During the mid-1990s, a five-year plan to renovate the airport was enacted, involving additional hangars, repaved runways and parking aprons, additional airfield guidance signage, and upgraded airfield lighting. On Aug. 31, 2011, a new general aviation terminal and FBO - Base Operations at Page Field - opened for business on the field's west side.
