In 1719, two canals were dug in order to connect the Moika River to the Neva River in St. Petersburg, which created a triangular island filled with waterways and canals, whose appearance caused it to be named New Holland. While it was originally a shipyard and naval base, it has since been renovated and is now filled with restaurants, cafes, and art galleries.
