Richmond International Airport

Richmond International Airport is a joint civil-military airport, It is currently the busiest airport in central Virginia, and the third-busiest in Virginia.

Airport history

In 1927, the airport was originally dedicated as Richard Evelyn Byrd Flying Field, after famous aviator Richard E. Byrd. Then, in 1950, it was renamed Richard E. Byrd Airport, and then changed names again in 1984 to Richmond International Airport. A terminal building was finished in 1950, and was then expanded, which took from 1968 to 1970 and included the passenger concourses that are still there today. The February 15, 1985 OAG named five airlines operating at the airport with jet aircraft, including Delta Air Lines, Eastern, Piedmont, United and USAir. Wheeler Airlines had a small hub at the airport and added non-stop flights from Charleston, WV and Parkersburg by 1986.

Airport location

It is located in Sandston, Virginia, an unincorporated community in Henrico County. It's only seven miles from downtown Richmond.

● In 2017, the airport served 3,657,479 passengers, which was an all-time record for the airport, surpassing its previous record of 3,634,544 in 2007. In 2018, the KRIC set an all-time passenger record of 4,077,763, which was an 11.5% increase over 2017.
