Originally called Glenn H. Curtiss Airport, the airport site was first occupied by the Gala Amusement Park, and. then it was renamed North Beach Airport. In 1937, New York City took over the airport and expanded the grounds with the purchase of adjoining land and by filling in 357 acres of waterfront along the east side. In 1939, it reopened with a new name, New York Municipal Airport-LaGuardia Field. The airport was leased to the Port Authority in 1947. A reconstruction and improvement program was started in 1957 and included a much larger, three-story terminal building out of which the six major airlines servicing LaGuardia would operate, along with a new control tower, a new southeast—northeast runway, a two-level terminal roadway, and an enlarged parking area next to the new terminal. Although LaGuardia was a large airport for the time in which it was built, it soon became too small. Starting in 1968, general aviation aircraft were charged heavy fees to operate from LaGuardia during peak hours, driving many operators to other nearby airports. In 2000, Congress passed legislation to revoke the federal traffic limits on LaGuardia by 2007. In late 2006, construction began to replace the outdated Wallace Harrison air traffic control tower with a more modern one. The tower began operations on October 9, 2010. In December of 2011, Delta Air Lines announced plans to open a new domestic hub at LaGuardia. The investment was the largest single expansion by any carrier at LaGuardia in decades, with flights increasing by more than 60%. By summer 2013, Delta increased operations to 264 daily flights between LaGuardia and more than 60 cities. It still remains one of the busiest airports on the East Coast.
